Sustainable Practices

Eco-Friendly Philosophy – Respecting the Environment

Our hotel has adopted a wide range of sustainable practices that promote environmental awareness:

  • We are founders and members of the first energy community in Messinia, so 100% of the electricity consumed by our hotel is generated from a photovoltaic system.
  • Central heating–cooling system with guest-controlled thermostats and personalized air flow.
  • Encouragement of linen reuse, with instructions available in every room.
  • Invoices and receipts are recommended to be sent via email to minimize paper use.
  • Recycling bins are available in both common areas and rooms, along with special bins for batteries, ink cartridges, and light bulbs.
  • Use of magnetic cards to control lighting and air-conditioning in rooms, plus motion sensors and photocells in common areas.
  • All electrical and electronic devices are energy-efficient with certified low consumption.
  • Exclusive use of LED low-energy lamps throughout the property.
  • Thermal insulation with energy-efficient windows and double-glass panes.
  • Water consumption monitoring to quickly detect and repair leaks.
  • Toilets equipped with dual flush systems, showers with low-flow heads, and taps with aerators.
  • Personal care products, such as shampoo and shower gel, are provided in refillable dispensers, reducing plastic waste.
  • Toilet paper is offered sheet by sheet, helping to limit waste and promote a more eco-friendly use.
  • Solar panel heaters provide hot water.
  • Our breakfast buffet features organic, seasonal, and locally sourced products. Food leftovers are collected and, in collaboration with a small local farm, are repurposed in a circular way: in return, we receive fresh vegetables, fruits, and eggs that are used to prepare our Greek Messinian breakfast — closing the food cycle and reducing our environmental footprint.
  • Use of eco-friendly detergents and biodegradable or bamboo amenities.
  • Environmentally aware staff, trained in sustainable practices, encouraged to use bicycles for commuting.
  • Bicycle rentals available for guests and an EV charging station situated at our parking space
  • Active participation in eco actions, such as the upcoming beach clean-up
  • Guests are encouraged to use our water filtrated cooler for drinking water.
  • We create handmade reusable bags from recycled fabrics for local product gifts and purchases.

Our Commitment

At HPA Hotel 4* , our philosophy is simple: to offer authentic Messinian hospitality with respect for the land and the environment. Every choice we make—from daily sustainable practices to larger ecological investments—aims to turn your stay into a responsible, high-quality, and truly sustainable experience.

FOODWASTE

Reducing Food Waste – Statistics & Local Action

At HPA Hotel 4*, we apply an innovative practice: every day we inform our guests about the amount of food wasted from the breakfast buffet, through a dedicated board placed in the dining area. For example:

  • Monday 1/9/2025: 4.5 kg
  • Tuesday 2/9/2025: 3.2 kg
  • Wednesday 3/9/2025: 2.8 kg

This way, guests can clearly see the reality of food waste and are encouraged to take only what they truly need. Importantly, leftover food is never thrown away; instead, it is composted or given as animal feed to a local farm—closing the food cycle in a sustainable way.

The Global Context – Why This Practice Matters

  • Production & Waste
Globally, we lose or waste about 1.3 billion tons of food every year, nearly one-third of all food produced for human consumption .
  • Consumption & Households
In 2022, worldwide food waste reached 1.05 billion tons. Of this, 60% came from households, 28% from food services, and 12% from retail . This equals roughly 132 kg per person annually .
  • Individual Contribution
On average, each person wastes about 79 kg of food every year, roughly the weight of an average adult human .
  • Environmental Impact
Food waste is responsible for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions .

Our commitment is clear: less waste, more awareness, and greater respect for our environment.
